Even wrecked and damaged cars often move via the highways. Getting to be farther and fewer between "load ups" moving to shop or scrap on a flat.

These days, a lot maybe most, wheel sets are moved on highway flatbed trailers, like a lot of roadway machines. Flat cars, other special propose types, are rare sights on today's railroads. A couple of years ago, a major power plant contractor, completed a big job, here in Southern Illinois, and couldn't get flats to move his cranes!

Interesting you mentioned that Pete, when I worked out of Omaha/Lincoln (very short time) I caught the night Havelock switch and I remember bringing back quite a few cars to Lincoln of loaded new wheels. But this was almost 5 years ago when they had switch jobs just about everywhere.
