Somewhere back in time I read that was the reason behind painting the roof red.  But in thinking about it, and if that was or is true why didn't all railroads do it ?

I saw a thread over at RYPN.org after I sent my earlier email and protecting the surface was also a reason for the painted roofs.

So red lead paint had no protective value? I thought perhaps it offered superior resistance to the corrosive effects of acidic water being deposited from the steam/smoke.
