 The Feb 2016 Trains Magazine had something on this. They said that some RR's claimed they were easier to see when moving around large yards by Yard Masters. Sounds kinda iffy but who knows?

Do we know why they started painting the roofs red?  Was it just a corporate "image" decision, or were red roofs better than black ones for some reason?
