Jan,
If you want to read sometime about the big boys - Vanderbilt Morgan
and the backers of the Pennsylvania Railroad - and how they could
waste incredible amounts of money battling each other, read "The
Railroad That Never Was" by Herbert Harwood Jr. Almost $6 million
was spent to build a railroad that was never finished or operated.
That is the equivalent of a $150 million today. This was just a
large scale version of what played out across the country during
this period.

Thanks, Steve, Leo, Bill and
Carroll...loads of great info there and I knew this group would
have the knowledge. The information about Gould was particularly
eye-opening, as I had assumed that most of the dirty-dealing was
from standard hucksters who showed up and promised something they
never intended to provide...but it appears that the worst
hucksters were some of the big players....
