The
Headlight looks to me to be Milwaukee Road.
The
General Electric original has been modified with the quad light group from the
Mars Company. Mars was founded by a Chicago Fireman who originally
developed the oscillating headlight as a warning device for Fire Trucks…..and
was funded by the Mars Candy Company owners hence the name. As an
aside, not only did the family name contribute to the selection of “Milky Way”
for one of their candy bars; the C&NW corridor to Harvard was referred to
as “the Milky Way” prior to the introduction of the candy
bar.
The
C&NW was an early adaptor of the Mars Light because of the influence of
their important customer Mars Candy Company.
I
would bet the headlight from the Milwaukee Road because of the modified larger
numberboards (although the Railroad Roman numbers themselves are probably
replacements). The Milwaukee was so concerned about the
readability of headlight number boards that they had the Elgin Watch Company
develop a special number set that was designed to improve the accuracy of
being read. Many of their locomotives also had the numberboards modified
to be larger (such as the E6 and E7 diesels).
