Hol, Doug and Michael - The Milwaukee electric locomotive GE headlight looks to be a lot larger than the headlight on the Q 0-6-0. Plus, I'll speculate the Q headlight only had one bulb and reflector rather than the four shown in Doug's link. Hol, what's your opinion on the unusual winged head and back-up lights? Merry Christmas - Louis

If you look at the photos of the so-called mars headlight, its builder's plate clearly shows it to be of General Electric manufacture -- and it is indeed the type used on many electric locomotives.  The four-light insert, either oscillating or more likely sequentially flashing, is of mars manufacture, however.  So it's a GE headlight with a Mars insert added at some later date.

Doug - Very surprising! I had always thought that MARS only manufactured gyrating locomotive headlights, not the style that your link shows. Looking at the link and comparing against the image of 1710, the headlights definitely look similar if not the same. Since MARS was located in Chicago, it could be that the Q was testing a set of them on 1710 to compare against their own cuckoo clock style and Pyle National winged headlights. Any other comments from the headlight experts in this Group? Merry Christmas - Louis

Louis at first I thought the photo showed what might be a Pyle National with angled number boards. But a Pyle headlight has a little more depth. Could it be one of these? http://www.discoverlivesteam.com/discoverforsale/forsale/5_Black/index.htm Claims this is a Mars headlight.

Mars locomotive headlight. Great Condition, early 1950s, looks to be all there. Size is 52" wide by 23" tall. A neat addition to your collection.
