Great Northern did in fact have four Rhode Island
4-6-0's that went to the CB&Q as part of the sale of the O'Neill branch to
the CB&Q. The late Joe Douda said in some correspondence with me that he
believed these were numbered as 942-945 on the CB&Q, and that all were part
of Class K-9. Great Northern records indicate that the engines that Joe believed
became 942-944 were virtually identical, with engine weights of 102,800 lb.
The remaining engine, which Joe believes became CB&Q 945, was slightly
larger, with a weight of 105,600 lb. Joe could find no disposition for CB&Q
945, but in his correspondence indicated that 942-944 were assigned to the Omaha
Division as of March 1, 1909. His records indicated that 942-944 were retired in
October 1912, October 1913, and November 1913, respectively.
Don't know if this information is helpful or just adds
more to the puzzle.

Here I go again on another bit of old locomotive
ephemera. In the 1904 numbering system the Q had 4-6-0s of classes K1
through K-7, plus K-9 and, very shortly, K-10. The K-6, K-7 and K-9
engines were small batches of locomotives acquired with other roads -- the
Keokuk & Western/Humeston & Shenandoah and the Jacksonville & St.
Louis. The K-6s were numbered 900-902 and the K-7s 910-912. The
K-9s were 940-941 There were plenty of numbers left open between the
latter two classes, so the missing K-8s could have been 920s or 930s.
Additionally, we know there were more than just the two 940s, as early 20th
century correspondence mentions them on Lines West. Unfortunately, I
know of no Lines West assignment sheets prior to 1914, and the earliest Lines
East one is for 1907 does not show the K-9s, which were not retired
until December 1922. In 1908 the pair was assigned to the Lacrosse
Division and by 1914 they are assigned to the Hannibal Division, where they
remained until retirement. Now, an image is being offered on eBay
that calls at least some of this into question. Here's a link to that

the one car with visible lettering is indeed Q, but what about the
locomotive? I'm attaching a copy of the eBay image and the only known
view of one of the K-9s, the 940. Fortunately, both are taken from
roughly the same angle, and a comparison shows them to almost certainly be
from the same group, and Rhode Island can be seen case into the cylinders of
both locomotives. But on the eBay image, the numeral 7 is legible
on the sand dome, either the second on third numeral of the locomotive's
number. And on the tender, the numeral 2 can be seen, the first
numeral of the engine number. So the locomotive is numbered either 27 or
2?7, neither of which fits with what we know of the 940 and 941. They
were both built by Rhode Island in June 1890 as Jacksonville South
Eastern 28-29 (awfully close there!!) and in 1894 became Jacksonville &
St. Louis 7-8. The J&StL came to the Q in 1903 and the pair became
940-941. The only other J&StL locomotive at the time the Q bought
the road was a 4-4-0 numbered 9. Are we simply missing a renumbering
here, or is something else going on?? I have no idea. Another
1890 Rhode Island Ten-Wheeler did come to the Q, though it has somewhat
smaller cylinders and larger drivers than the K-9s. I thought at first
it might be the missing K-8 class, but it didn't join the Q roster until
Nov. 2, 1907, three or four years after the classes were set up. That
locomotive was built by Rhode Island in April 1890 as Pacific Short Line 12,
becoming Sioux city, O'Neill & Western 18 on Jan. 1, 1892 and Sioux City
& Western 18 in 1899. The SC&Q was absorbed by the Great
Northern in 1900, and the engine became GN 996. Then on Nov. 2, 1907,
the GN sold the line to the Q as the O'Neill Branch, and the locomotive is
believed to have become CB&Q 945, and as I noted earlier there were
possibly locomotives on the roster at that time numbered 942-944.
