Just slightly off topic, but I wonder, how hard was it to MU steam engines?  As "easy" as today, or more demanding?

I keep getting sidetracked as I gather images to illustrate Q power leased to its subsidiaries.  This time I ran into what, from a Burlington fan's perspective, must be the greatest photo that Gerald M. "Jerry" Best ever shot, and I've attached it here.  It depicts triple-headed Q steam on the Espee in southern California!  Two oil-burning R-4 Prairies  -- 1955 and 1907 -- lead oil-burning S-3 Pacific 2974 and the interminable string of freight cars that make up First 824 as it blasts its way out of the Los angles metroplex at Alhambra on Feb. 22, 1942.  The green flags hung ahead of the train indicator boards on the 1955 do indeed indicate that a second section follows.  And of course there's a blackout shield on the 1955's cuckoo clock headlight.  What a scene.

Since we are talking leassed engines, during WWII six engines were leased to the SP. There were three praries and three pacifics.

All engines have blackout headlight and class llight, numberboards, and were conv. to oil.

I have identified the following.

PRARIE

1907                  R-4                  Retired 12-46

1955                  R-4                  SFS 5-48

2113                  R-5a                  Retired   9-50

PACIFIC

2932                  S-2a                  SFS 12-51

2974                  S-3                  SFS   8-51
