[CBQ] Re: Seasonal use of gondolas on the Q

Jonathan, Burlington Bulletin #32 was on Sugar Beets. In the western region served by the Q and C&S, sugar beets are an annual crop, with harvest taking place once a year in Sept & Oct. When harvest began the beet rush was on, and every available car was pressed into service moving beets. Gons and hoppers were normally used, but even stockcars hauled beets.

 

Whereas in Southern California, growing conditions are such that sugar beets can be raised year round, leading to the need for beet cars (ie SP beet racks) in dedicated service.
