OK, I'll try to answer several questions here and make a point.  That point:  My book on the equipment of the C&S-FW&D lists ALL the passenger equipment owned by those roads, right up through the articulated Denver Zephyr trains purchased from the Q in 1956 to re-equip the 1940 Texas Zephyr.

And, yes, all three roads -- Q, C&S and FW&D -- had very similar if not identical 70-foot all-steel coaches, the Q's in the 6100 series, the C&S numbered 549-554 and the FW&D 201-207.  They all measured 70'-8.5" over body end sills.  As built they were true coaches, meaning they had fixed, walk-over seats as opposed to the reclining/revolving seats of chair cars.  But by the 1950ss all of them (except a few assigned to suburban commuter service) had been converted into chair cars with interior layouts virtually identical to the Q's 4500 series chair cars, which were very similar in exterior appearance to the 6100s, though having five fewer windows in the seating area because of the spacing of the reclining seats.  Interestingly, cars 6117-6118 were built as combination coach-chair cars, with walk-over coach seats in one have and reclining chair car seats in the others.  And the window spacing changed accordingly in the middle of the car.

These steel heavyweight coaches were extensively modified through the years, and a detailed history of them appeared way back in Burlington Bulletin No. 4, which also covered the EMD F-units.  The two Ray Buhrmaster photos I posted appeared in that article.

Finally, all three roads kept these cars(or at least some of them)  in service until 1966-67, when the termination of the Railway Mail Service contracts nationwide eliminated all but major through passenger trains.  A number of the cars still exist around the country.

Hope this answers everything that was asked.

Hol

How late were these HW coaches in use on the Q and did they frequent any particular trains/area? Wondering if they would have any application on secondary trains (e.g. Blackhawk) on Chicago to Mpls/StP trains?
