Ken you have received several good answers. One,point not yet made is the priority of the train. A drag might get 1 horse per trailing ton while a high priority train might get 3 or 4. I have seen extremes of 6 and 8 horses per trailing ton. On one occasion I saw what that much HP can do to a coupler(not the knuckle, but rather what operating RRers call the drawbar). Yanked it out like it wasn't even there from a dead stop. I have been on more than one high priority train where two or three trailing units were turned off line to avoid the above from happening. On the other hand I was on scores of trains where you wanted to get out and push to help get over the grade. Yes we were moving at less than a walking pace.
