Drying Room...this was know as a "SAND HOUSE".....which with its attendant stove for drying was a gathering place for railroaders to gather for what..shall we say..was a "bull session"...giving rise to the name "Sandhouse Gossip"...a railroader's term for rumors. There is a group of "Academics in the Chicago area who call themselves "The Sandhouse Gang"...a sort of self depricating poke at the purpose of their own organization.

It all makes a lot more sense now. That's an excellent picture of the Soo Line chute. I wish it were slightly larger, but the sand hopper is clearly visible. Can you interpret any more details in this photo? What are the two buildings to the left of coal chute? I'm guessing one is probably the drying room, the other maybe houses the engine that powers the hoist? I see what looks like a pipe or cable going from the leftmost building diagonally up to the bottom of the chute. Do you know what it is?
Thanks again,
Jonathan Harris

While not a CBQ coal chute, here is a photo of a Soo coal chute with a very visble sand hopper on the side of the tower. http://www.american-rails.com/images/Soo_RK_CoalTower.jpg
