I can not speak on turn of the century rolling mills and loading processes, but the concept of loading rail in any sort of house car (Box, stock, etc.) regardless of length is painful to contemplate. Once rail weight increased to more than 65 lb. per yard, the 39-foot length was the standard. While many light weight spurs have been torn up or relaid, there is still a lot of light rail on industrial trackage around the country and it is a pretty safe guess that it was delivered on 40 or 50 foot flat cars. Since I have my share of time on extra gangs and through the ranks experience from Track patrolman to Road Master, here's  the view from Colorado.  Jim Sandrin
