Hol,
I missed that. You should have the Baggage-Tavern head end in the standard consist in the early years - especially if you are doing a college holiday weekend run (you would have some baggage), so a special may be the reason.

I know the 300s were used backwards as parlor cars on the Twins, and the extra domes could be an excursion (fall foliage tour seeming the most likely), but the absence of a head-end car bothers me; was that common on the Twins? This is Savanna, IL - so it's the usual run for the consist. Two more domes than usual. The 300 series sometimes substituted when the dome obs were ailing, so it could be a return run. I agree, it's unusual to have all the extra cars - maybe a holiday move for colleges - but I doubt they would use domes rather than flat-top coaches...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/208-40s-Railroad-Action-Burlington-Zephyr-Vtg-35mm-Kodachrome-Slide-Red-/141403823550?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20ec531dbe The seller says 1940s, based on the Kodak red border slide mount. With that many domes it's clearly an excursion run of some sort, presumably with the Twin's dome-parlor-obs on the rear and the 300-series dining-parlor-obs backwards up front so it could be on the rear on the return run (which would leave the dome seats facing backward). The truck skirts are gone from the E5, so it's at least very late 1940s or early 1950s. Kind of hard to remove this many cars from regular Twin service for an excursion, though. Fall foliage trip maybe? And I'm sure all of you will be able to tell me the location. Thanks! Hol __._,_.___ Posted by: rgortowski@aol.com __,_._,___ |
