Dynamic braking is the engineers "First choice" now days.  With the AC units 
you're only allowed to use two on the head end,  as the generate the maximum 
dynamic retarding force allowed.  As mentioned by others fuel saving is the 
main reason.   
 

 To give an example of another good reason for the use of dynamic braking:
 

      Back in the '70's a set of coal empties left Alliance to be loaded south 
of Gillette.  The engine consist had no working dynamic brake.  The train and 
power made the whole cycle from loading, to the unloading point,  and back to 
Alliance where they had to change every brake shoe.  Shoes normally (at that 
time) got changed twice a year.
