The photo you posted is a fairly common postcard view that is usually
captioned as the first scheduled train into Kirby from the north, in 1907.

OK, I'm going to date the image 1914 with a question mark. That would fit
with the clothing styles worn by those in the image. Thanks!

Harold - Do you think the image might indeed be of the actual first
through run sometime around 1922 when the Wind River Canyon line was
completed?
The K2 certainly looks a little bit worse for wear and the roadbed pretty
much looks to be dirt, untreated ties and light rail. From the tired looking
crew on the pilot to the cowboys on horses, certainly a varied group on
hand to celebrate whatever event it was.

Louis,
It would not have been through the Big Horn Basin as the portion through
the Wind River Canyon was the last completed and that was around 1922.
Trains went to Thermopolis and Stage Coached over the Owl Creek Mountains to
Bonneville and on to Casperand reverse for the Casper traffic. Kuby would be
a mispell for Kirby. North of Thermopolis.

While on the subject of Lines West photographs taken by John Barriger, I
found the attached image elsewhere on the Web showing CB&Q Class K-2 No. 640
(former B&MR No. 312). The image was identified as the first train though
Big Horn Basin to Kuby, WY, 1890.

The date is incorrect as the 640 was built for the B&MR by Rogers in
December 1892. Plus, it wasn't renumbered to CB&Q 640 until 1904. Thus, the
image had to been taken after 1904. Also, some of the clothing styles in this
image look to be more like the 1910 to 1920 era. Could this image have
recorded a later reenactment of the first train through the Big Horn Basin?
Also, where was/is Kuby, WY?
