Steve'

I don't know who HHH is, but I was delighted to hear you use that old railroad term..."RUN HIM OFF"...It's been "many a year" since I've heard that one...it was common on the RI and apparently on other roads as well...Also "DEHORNED" was said of an official who had been demoted.

Pete

And what is interesting also is the amount of research and development the road did or was involved in.  And it seems like that all died with the BN merger.  Very little advance signaling was done with BN.  They signal tracked the Creston Div and made a HUGE mess of it resulting in massive delays and it still carries over to today.  I worked the job for about 6 years second trick and they would come around each year and ask us what we wanted.  There was CTC in place but not being used at Talamage Jct(old CGW crossover east of Creston) and Chariton and rather then move control into GT to the desk and give some flexibility to the job it was ripped out.  Then applied Track Warrant Control and for all practical purpose that over rode the ABS(rule 251) signaling.  It would have better to keep the double track and CTC the whole thing in an effort to increase efficiency.  The only good thing that happened was to run HHH off before he could rape the BN like he did the GTW and IC.  Then BN builds up the Expediter Service and the BNSF merger happens to KILL that with most traffic moved to the ATSF which was in such a mess most of the BN experts had to bail it out to even allow the FRA allow it to stay in service.  And the managers they dumped on the BN sides did nothing but run people down and off the main reason I retired.
I will try and get a list of the articles I have to you.  I finally got them in order. Did I send you a list of the towers?  This was something another former DS Don Seeger (before he passed away) and I worked on along with Peter Thompson(of England) It was started from a list in some old State of Illinois Warehouse Annual reports.  Hmm I wonder now where that old computer file of it is at. I better get back to paper shuffling

Yes.  Draft only.  I started at the beginning with manual block, and controlled manual block.  I'm almost done with automatic block.  I've barely scratched the surface with remote control and CTC.  The complete history of signals on the Q could be exhaustive.

Nelson:

Iowa City is reasonably close to St. Louis.  If you get a chance, go to the Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri, St. Louis.  It is on the north side of St. Louis south of Lambert Field.

The Mercantile Library has a large transportation reference library, including many periodicals.  Included are complete volumes of 'The Signal Engineer' renamed 'Railway Signal Engineer' renamed 'Railway Signaling' renamed 'Railway Signaling and Communications', from about 1906 or 1907 to past 1970.

There is a lot of information in these volumes on CB&Q signals, literally hundreds of pages if one were to copy every reference to the CB&Q.  It's not a complete history, but still a lot of info.  I have copied most of this information, or at least taken notes of what is on a particular page, to help with research on Q signals.

Steve,

Those would be great references to add to the files section, if you have a way to scan them to pdfs. I checked the University of Iowa library, and they have Railway Signaling Vol. 23-41 covering 1930-1948, so the articles you cite aren’t available here in Iowa City. Let me know if you have any other Q signaling references that fall in the range available here at UI.
