The contrast between IC's Dbq depot and their E. Dbq depot was even more
pronounced than the Burlingtons but that is part of the reason the IC's E Dbq
depot was always spartan (the older IC E. Dbq depot, replaced in 1950's, was an
old beat-up one that had a pot belly stove in center of a small waiting room!)
IC had no great reason to upgrade E. Dbq as their operations inc. big yard,
roundhouse, large frt house, etc were all in Dbq. On the other hand, the
Burlington's passenger trains only stopped in E. Dbq (except for a couple rare
steam excursions) but they could not force IC to build a bigger, newer station
for years and had precious little room to construct their own if they chose
that option. Plus even in the hey day of passenger service, RR's got the bulk
of their income from freight and nearly all the industry was on the Iowa side
as were the offices & yards for Milw, IC & CGW. Thus a nice DBQ facility gave
close access for the Q to frt customers & other RR's clerks, etc. And
surprisingly a fair number of Dubuquers would park their cars at the Dbq depot
(or have someone drop them off) and take the bus over the Mississippi despite
having use of the E. Dbq depot. Milw's Dbq depot was a block or two away (W
side of tracks) and IC's a couple blocks south of the Q's; ditto for frt houses
for inter-RR transfer. CB&Q had a similar situation in Winona - a little
shelter on the Wis side but a store front depot in downtown Winona for folks
who did not want to have to stray too far from home. Gerald
