I know, for awhile, the MOP used gondola cars for containers. It was a tight squeeze on the sides!

Some scans would be nice but I know that during that time period the UP was using 53' 6" GSC flats with container tie downs moving containers from west coast ports to inland destinations like Chicago. UP, Southern, MP and others modified what cars they had on hand to handle the new boxes until the manufacturers decided to fill the need for cars that could handle both trailers and containers. Also, in the beginning, the side loaders (originally built to handle logs) made by LeTorneau and others were not designed to lift containers. They were at first only able to lift trailers. As more and more containers were being used, more appropriate purpose designed handling equipment for containers became available including straddle cranes, side loaders and few other weird devices that didn't last.
