Some scans would be nice but I know that during that time period the UP was 
using 53' 6" GSC flats with container tie downs moving containers from west 
coast ports to inland destinations like Chicago. UP, Southern, MP and others 
modified what cars they had on hand to handle the new boxes until the 
manufacturers decided to fill the need for cars that could handle both trailers 
and containers.  Also, in the beginning, the side loaders (originally built to 
handle logs) made by LeTorneau and others were not designed to lift containers. 
 They were at first only able to lift trailers.  As more and more containers 
were being used, more appropriate purpose designed handling equipment for 
containers became available including straddle cranes, side loaders and few 
other weird devices that didn't last.
