Wonder who outmanuevered whom as according to Dorins "The Elgin,Joliet and Eastern" the year 1891 saw the Gardner,Coal City and Nothern folded into the EJ&E. The 1906 map shows the line complete from Plainfield(Walker) to So. Wilmington. By 1951 the line ends at Goose Lake.

Probably a good thing the Q didnt build east from Sheridan as the farther North in Illinois you go the less coal is in the ground.

Actually the Newberry has quite a few references to the CB&Q’s interest in running a line to Joliet.   They surveyed a line that would loop around through Joliet to tap the Coal City / Braidwood area and link up with existing Sheridan line, primarily because there was concern that the coal reserves in the Sheridan area were playing out.   They also considered buying /paralleling what became the EJ&E.   I believe I have some copies of some of the files and / or notes packed away.

Search under Joliet,Rockford and Northern. Basically it's the line from Paw Paw to Burgess Jct,Sheridan Jct,Catherine(all the same place, just different names.

It's what we all referred to as the Baker Main. In a future BB you'll see a plat map of  Earlville where the JRN crosses the Denver main east of downtown Earlville and then crosses the CNW branch north of town;long before the switches were installed for trackage rights on the CNW

Looking through the Aurora Beacon Feb 18, 1881, I noticed it mentioned the CBQ was surveying a line for either Mendota or Earlville to Sheridan to Joliet. Anyone know anything about this?
