In the same subject there use to be barrels around the sections houses. But not the later standard straight sided with the two ridges of most modeled barrels but a larger barrel same height but with smooth sides and had the bulge like a wood barrel and the top(never saw a bottom) was dished in the middle with about a three inch flat raised area around the edges and around the bung hole. In the same building we used as a locker room and office at the stock yard in Montgomery they rebuilt the North side of the building with a large door and used it as a truck shop for the various off-rail trucks so we had a few of the barrels around there too. Rupert:
It's y understanding that the white band around tank cars in company service indicated that they were assigned to gasoline service, carrying the gasoline used not only in passenger motor cars and "track speeders" but also in the steadily growing fleet of company off-rail vehicles -- cars, trucks and other equipment. Hol To: CBQ@yahoogroups.com From: gamlenz@ihug.co.nz Date: Sun, 14 Apr 2013 17:58:44 +1200 Subject: [CBQ] Banded tank car Looking at a 1942 photo of TM-4B tank car #230508, it has a light coloured band painted round one half of the tank near the dome. I presume that this was to indicate possible loading restrictions, such as potable water only.
[These tank cars were 12,000 gallon capacity, built in 191913/14 by AC&F, and the heater coils were removed in about 1938. The photo predates the 1943 ORER note regarding temporary assignment of tank cars to commercial service during the war, so it is presumed to be in company service.] __._,_.___
