Looking at a 1942 photo of TM-4B tank car #230508, it has a light coloured band painted round one half of the tank near the dome.  I presume that this was to indicate possible loading restrictions, such as potable water only.  

 

[These tank cars were 12,000 gallon capacity, built in 191913/14 by AC&F, and the heater coils were removed in about 1938.  The photo predates the 1943 ORER note regarding temporary assignment of tank cars to commercial service during the war, so it is presumed to be in company service.]

Does anyone have any information on this marking?
