After reading this I pulled out my copy of Burlington Bulletin #13 "Shovelnoses." For years I've wished someone would make a version of the four-wheel truck shovelnoses (9904, 9905,9906S or 9907A). The curves on my home layout are too tight for six-wheel trucks, but the Intermountain and Kato "F" units work just fine. A Silver King, Pegasus, Injun Joe or Silver Knight shell that would fit over an Intermountain or Kato unit would have my money. -----Original Message-----

All,
I have decided to heed Charlie Vlk's admonishments and work up N scale body shell 3D models that can be downloaded from Shapeways ( http://www.shapeways.com ) as more and more modelers are doing, especially in N and Nn3 scales. I'm working from my 2D CAD layouts that I used in developing photoetch artwork (mostly never etched), together with the 3D shapes I developed for machining core pieces that would be used with the etched skins. I'm starting with Silver Charger because that was the farthest-developed 3D model, but am also planning Aeolus and the EA/EB shells. Even though Silver Charger is the farthest along, I haven't started surface detailing, just blocking out major features. I'm attaching a screenshot. I will do the surface detailing to match the Kato prewar coaches from a few years back. Those cars have molded-in grab irons and provide pretty good standins for Silver Eagle coach and Silver Star observation. For the EA/EB, I have no idea what chassis are on the market that would work with them. I plan to just make hollow shells and let the buyer arrange how to mount them on a chassis. Same thing for Aeolus, though that is more problematic given that all N scale steam locomotives are over-wide over the siderods and valve gear. I'll post updates on my website as I make any significant progress, and I'll welcome input on what you'd like to see in the shells.
