Oh no you didn't!!!!!
Started a paint color discussion!!

For most, if not all, paints having a 55 gal drum of original paint would not do you much good

I had Danny Pantera (sp?) paint up some F7s back when I was still in HO c1965 or so.  I had a liquid sample of paint I got at Clyde. The units turned out darker than any of the worst Greys under discussion here using the actual prototype paint....more of a cadet grey.
Some of this is due to application methods and base paints and primers used on the prototype.  It is said that the GM&O Red and ATSF are the same paint....the difference being underlying coats and finish coats.
Add to this the fact that color has scale and we don't view our small models in direct sunlight conditions with a blue sky overhead, you have to artistically interpret what colors LOOK right on the average model railroad
The paint codes are fairly widely known and the BRHS is fairly well represented on the Model Railroad Industry by myself and other members of the society that various manufacturers contact for Q projects,  John Lee and Nolen Null among others.   There are color drift cards around that are a starting point for some colors, but like painting a room from a color chip the actual color can vary on the wall.
Color is the worst part of making model and everyone has an opinion that is usually different from what the factory finally produces

Wouldn’t the BRHS be able to contact EMD, as they would have the records for the proper paint codes? Look at the recent NS “Heritage Fleet”. The NS talked to both EMD and GE for paint codes for these heritage units, the railroads that actually were customers of EMD and/or GE. About ½ of the railroads the NS crews had to “shoot from the hip” as some of the predecessor roads were neither EMD or GE customers. I am not trying to sound “off topic”, but just making a suggestion here……

As one of the remaining dinosaurs from the BRHS formative years, here is a bit of history concerning our roots. Both Rod (Bat) Masterson and Ed Derouin served as conduits to manufacturers to insure some tokin of  accuracy in their models and paint colors.  Sadly both of these friends are gone due to cancer and no new links have been established to fill the need.  Another aid in matching Blackbird/Redbird schemes were the paint chips that Bob Landregan once provided, now probably very rare.  Uncle Bob matched the original Duco color codes and had Dupont produce the actual color chips.  When one was the chief engineer at FMC/Gunderson, such requests were honored by suppliers!
