Thanks for the responses and the photo references. Two quick questions -
Was the Boyer speed recorder on the later steam locos (such as the O-5) still driven off the front truck wheel with the recording box adjacent to it?
How often were the tapes actually checked? Was it a routine check or only when something went wrong?

Yes speed recorders were used in later steam IF you look at Karl's latest post you can see the speed recorder.  They had a paper tape as did most later Diesel recorders and on a trip to the basement of the Aurora Depot in the late '60's there was a storage case of them there and I have on I think one from Big Alice somewhere in the storage area.

I'm aware that Boyer Speed Recorders were being used on the Burlington in 1886 for the Burlington Brake Trials and that the Burlington was still fitting these in 1906, but does anyone know how long this particular recorder was used? Was there a speed recorder in the final days of steam?
