Keith-
The Phase refers to the as-built configuration of a unit. E-5s were built in early and late 1940 and mid 1941. Most E-6s were built after 1941.
So the only Phase II units are E5A 9914A,B – 9915A,B/. These four units were originally intended to be run as A-A combination locomotives. The earlier Phase I units were purchased as an individual units 9909 & 9913, and A/B locomotives 9910A,B – 9912 A,B, 9950A,B and 9980A,B.
There were some differences between the Phase I and Phase II units on the side of the cab and on the ends of the units.
The Valerio units are based on the LifeLike E6 shell so most closely resemble the Phase II E5A shell. The B units had different roof radiators and nobody has gotten them correct AFAIK in brass or whatever.
Bare Metal Foil is going to be a task to get over all the corrugations and other surface detail but might turn out to be very striking.
You are doing a lot of work considering Kato is bringing out the units RTR…..I’d at least do them as Phase II Units. There is a strong possibility that Kato might do the E5B later to pull a 1948 Twin Cities Zephyr if the sales of the Silver Streak Zephyr and separate E5s are good….so all of us need to buy out their production, even though Mr. Wallet and Mrs. Credit Card may not be happy!!!
