It is all about dollars. Truck provide better service at cheaper rates. Today's railroads are not interested in small shippers or receivers.

John,

This is very intersting. Can you tell us if the reason from switching from Rail to Truck was because the volume of concrete being sold went down, for example, a large construction project in the area finished up, or if trucks offered a lower rate charge?

Trying to work out why the switch at that particular time.

James

The Sesser concrete plant did indeed receive materials  by rail and had hoppers under the track to unload cement cars and sand cars. The crushed stone came by truck. After about 1985, everything came by truck.

I am throwing this question out to Mr Mitchell, but I figure it might be of general interest to everyone.
There was (and still is) a small concrete plant on the west side of the tracks, on the south side of Sesser. From what I can make out on the track plans there is a siding that goes to it.
Did the railroad drop off or pick up anything there, i.e. sand, gravel or cement?
If so what type of cars were used?
Was there a place on the track for items to be dumped, a bin or auger?
I got these Q covered hoppers I am itching to use.
Thanks!
