As discussed some months ago on this list, the heavyweight sleepers continued in their full Pullman paint scheme as long as they were in Pullman lease, even though owned by the Q. Once they were withdrawn from Pullman lease (and thus from revenue sleeping car service) they eventually had Pullman on the letterboard and the car name on the body below painted out, replaced simply with CB&Q initial and the Q car number under it, both centered on the body where the car name had been. Cars so lettered WERE NOT in revenue service as sleeping cars but instead functioned as crew dormitory cars, with some of the open section cars occasionally being pressed into service as coaches.

Subject: [CBQ] Sleeping Car Poplar Branch/Flat et, al.
Al: I am busily planning my next layout between Manly, IA. and Albert Lea, MN. With this in mind, I will be running a CB&Q version of #561/562, the Zephyr Rocket. I am about to send to the paint shop my rendition of Poplar Branch/Flat. I have a question about the lettering though. The only photo I have seen shows PULLMAN on the letterboard. Was this replaced by BURLINGTON in the late 50s'? Did small "pullman" signage show up by the vestibule doors? Inquiring minds need to know. Thanks, Paul Buhrke.
