BTW...I lived in Hannibal four blocks past the old Levering Hospital on the right kind of up the hill.. From: Lindsey Fowler <lindsey_m_fowler@yahoo.com> To: "CBQ@yahoogroups.com" <CBQ@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 1, 2012 4:20 PM Subject: Re: [CBQ] Sorry..it was M.E. Hagan.. I went to see Dr. Rister and Gray on Broadway up close to the new post office when I was little..in the 60's. As my reward, I got to go to the general offices and around the yard some... Mr. Hagen's secretary was always so nice..and so was the yard clerk. They'd give me everything under the sun..one of those metal hand lanterns, all the calenders, matches, anything that said Burlington Route on it. They'd show me into the dispatcher's office to watch the line up the CTC machines for you guys. I actually met you out by the hack pit. I think it was but you were off going home I think. It wasn't until back in '99 when I got brave and stopped by your house..you showed us your hack in the yard. BTW..is that an old H&ST.J or wads that a H&ST.L hack? Anyways.. always thought of you when I saw a train on the
Brookfield sub, but you were not on them I later found out..you were on the K-Line I think. Yes I was kind of upset they tor down the depot at Palmyra..I guess they thought two was too many.. Did you ever know Ron Herron in Elsberry? He loved to haul crews.. The reason I liked the CB&Q was my Uncle Lester (Sam to his friends) in Galesburg.. He was a hoghead and ran the C&I, and at one time ran West Quincy and back for some reason.. I got to ride with him on several occasions. (always wanted a conductor to set me up in the hack for a ride..but no takers) He retired off the old West Hump there in Galesburg..43 years I think. He started out firing S-2s, and I think they put him on an O5a which I think was the 5631, or the '19, but not sure, and the fireman initiated him by making him hand fire that coal burning auger machine with a large scoop shovel and that very small firebox door, got the
hoghead all worked up..no pressure. Of course he was playing along.. The fireman was bumping the auger to keep things peculating while all this was going on.. Anyways. I fell in love with the CB&Q... had the most respect for anyone who bore the title "Burlington Route Employee"... still have that respect.. That was the original Jo Main, but this section was abandoned around 1957 and the westbound trains went up the KLine and around the wye at Falk or Mark and then west to Palmyra. That wye was built around 1947 or 48. The H&StJo had two depots in Palmyra. One was on Main St. and the other at the Junction of the Quincy Line and the old Jo Main. Refresh my memory, what were you doing around Hannibal in the days of ME Hagen? On May 1, 2012, at 12:07 AM, Lindsey Fowler wrote:
