Pete: thanks for the kind words, have a few more stored in the memory bank. I 
do realize now that when one works on the railroad, depending on your job, 
incidents like I have been realating were able to occur with alarming 
frequency. As a locomotive machinist working alone, or with a laborer at a 
remote and isolated urban railyard location provided the setting for many 
unusual things to happen. In addition, my job required that if the other 
machinists over at the 23rd st roundhouse were busy (or asleep) I was sent to 
cover breakdowns and restart failed motors out on the mainline south of Denver 
Union Depot. In addition, if a train left Denver with cab supplies missing, 
plugged sanders or other miscellany, I was called away from Rice Yard. the 
farthest south I went on those breakdowns was to the Air Force Academy at 
Colorado Springs. Sedalia, Palmer Lake, and Greenwood were common destinations. 
Once the trains had cleared Palmer Divide, it was a lot of downhill running and 
the crews would "Knock em' in the head" (shut down or isolate a bad locomotive) 
for the balance of the trip, the errant motor often was cut off and set off on 
a siding, to be picked up and returned to Denver on the next Northbound 
freight. Coal power was always new or in pretty good shape and little trouble 
was experience. Back in the mid-seventies, the BN used mid train radio 
controlled "slaves" which were always a problem becuase the technology was in 
its infancy and many, many teething problems. One reason there are few stories 
provided to the BRHS by engineers who ran on the joint line south of Denver is 
due to the fact that they were all ATS&F engineers and probably do not belong 
to this organization, someone needs to do some recruiting or arm twisting to 
get at some of those stories. Once a train departed south out of Pueblo, BN 
engineers were back at the helm through Walsenburg, Trinidad, and Texline.
