Price was always a factor. If the plant in Rochelle or Chicago offered a better price, livestock in transit could be rerouted. Livestock owners always sought the best price. They might hold animals at a feed & rest station until the price improved.

 

One other factor I just remembered: if the St Paul plant had more animals than it could process and the Chicago plant was coming up short, then Swift might ship livestock from one to the other, just to keep the Chicago plant operating. Or Swift ordered their buyers to pay a better price or divert livestock bought for St Paul.
