I've mentioned this before but the mention of the IC bananas reminds me of a
long-term research area that I'd like other historians in the group to be on
the lookout for....

The IC ran into Chicago from the west on trackage rights over the CB&Q from
Galena and later Iowa. This extends back to the days from when the Chicago
& Aurora reached the IC main line at Mendota and the Chicago & Aurora was
still running from Aurora to West Chicago and into Chicago on the G&CU over
the St. Charles Airline from Harlem in the early 1850s.

The IC did not complete their direct Chicago, Madison & Northern until late
1899 for various reasons. While there were some periods where the IC used
other lines (CGW) the IC first used the Q from Mendota, then when the C&I
was built the CM&N /C&I/CB&Q, then the IC to LaVerne to the CB&Q. I don't
know if the connection at LaVerne was temporary or if the IC was elevated
over the Q at the time of construction (likely) or if it crossed the Q at
grade.

There seems to be a scarcity of photos of trains on the CB&Q taken prior to
1900 in the Chicago area and none that I can recall of freight trains....
and certainly none of IC trains on the Q at all!!!

Perhaps some of the digitized books, etc.. can shed some light on this area.
