I do the same, only using drafting tape (less adhesive than masking tape).

Rich,
Make a template from a scale 1 x 12 strip of Evergreen styrene. Put tiny dots
where the serifs will lay. Tape down the template to the window with a low tack
tape. You can use the base line of the template to line up the letters. I have
used this method for aligning the noodle letters on an ex 400 car where there
are no rivets or sills to use.

Scott,
No - those decals are still available, but I have a lot of passenger cars to
letter with this style lettering (30 plus). The thought of individually cutting
out and spacing "BURLINGTON" for the letterboards (30 x 2 x 10 letters = 600) -
makes my eyes cross! Unfortunately, the Champ decals have horrible spacing.
That is why custom decals are looking more and more attractive.

Rich,
When I went home last night, I checked the decals I have been using for my
heavyweight passenger cars. They were Microscale #90013 Railroad Roman,
Extended Letters and Numbers, Gold and #87-1221 Pullman Heavyweight Passenger
Cars, Gold Lettering. The font is the same for both sets.
Are you saying that Microscale no longer offers these two sets?

I was searching through the Microscale on-line catalogue and I confirmed
that, apparently, the only source of RR Roman passenger car decals is the now
defunct Champ decals. Is that correct? Anyone know a source that still
has these available?
