Yes, 9908 definitely was reassigned to Galesburg-Burlington-Dayman
service after the demise of trains 1 and 44. In June 1963 I photographed
it in the roundhouse at Galesburg, coming out for the caboose hop to
Burlington (following No. 12, the Nebraska Zephyr, quite closely -- it
was always in view from the obs car), picking up the Atomic Energy
Commission guard car that No. 12 set out and Burlington, and taking it
on to the plant at Dayman.
Before service on 1 and 44, the 9908 had worked the Lincoln-St. Joe run.

I believe Silver Charger was the last regularly assigned engine for
trains 1 and 44. I used to see #44 north of Hannibal frequently in its
last year, and the 9908 always seemed to be on the head end, pulling an
RPO and a coach, usually both heavyweights. These trains ran St. Louis
to West Quincy, and came off in the spring of 1963. I don't believe
this was the end of the line for Silver Charger, however. I'm not sure
where it was assigned after the spring of 1963. Possibly Galesburg to
Dayman.

In answer to Bill Hoss's comment: Yes, that's precisely the train that
I'll be using 9908 to pull -- St.Louis to Burlington, later cut back to
either Hannibal or West Quincy (can't remember right now). Trains were
numbers 1 and 44 by early sixties. I'll be pulling either a Walthers 5
window or modified Rivarossi 3 window RPO and (for now) a Branchline
coach.

Didn't the Silver Charger finish it's career pulling a heavyweight
(mail
train) out of St. Louis? Aren't cars available for that?
