Reading that story, in particular the part about the passenger train passing the special, reminds me of a story my uncle told me years ago. He was on that steam special and got left behind at Aurora. He was taking pictures or whatnot, and didn't make it back on board! Trying to figure out what to do, he bought a ticket for the next passenger train (I don't remember which one now) to Galesburg. He passed the steam special and waited for it in Galesburg. And waited. He found out from a RR employee what had happened. I have his Galesburg pictures somewhere. Haven't looked at them for some time now and IIRC, all the steam on display there was well polished and spotted perfectly for pictures.
