You're right about the "left hand drive" on the switchers...I never saw one
either, but heard enough about them that I think it's real

The Lumber District could be the subject of an entire book.
They had switchers (don't know about the use of O class Mikados though) that
were fitted out with left hand controls because of the track layout it was
better for the engineer to be on the wrong side of the cab. I haven't confirmed
it with Q records but I've heard that from a number of people over the years.

What the maps do not show is the real complexity of the segment that paralells
Sangamon Street. At about 18th Street off the elevated main line a double
curved concrete rampway drops down to streeet level and served some large brick
structures with thier own sidings. Some of the grade crossings still exist with
telltale signs of one, two and three tracks crossing the streets. Using Google
Earth and other 3-D maps reveal sidings into and through some of the
structures. The line proceeds toward Cermak and splits into multiple wyes to
serve more buildings and connect with the east and west line that paralells the
south side of Cermak and the Com-Ed plant. This line crosses Halsted Street and
gets interresting again under the expressway. Evidence of curved sidings,
switches and a small diamond are still there. The line eventually veers to the
north over Cermak and heads toward the Zephyr Pits but not before serving more
industries.
I have been researching this area for a possible shelf layout or module in HO
for some time. I was told this was called the Lumber District as there was a
proliferation of box and furniture manufacturers. It was switched out with a Q
Mike. The recently released Atlas "Middlesex Manufacturing" warehouse kit would
be a great starter for buildings typical of this area.
I would be interrested in any actual trackage diagrams anybody has for this
fascinating area.
Sincerely,
Rob Manley
