I just installed the couplers in my SW9/1200 and while the box is tight,
mine slipped in without force. The trick is to assemble the coupler in the
box first, snap the cover on, then slide it through from the front with the
coupler box flange facing down (toward the top of the locomotive, assuming
you've inverted it on a cradle). Of course, you need to make sure the trip
pin is facing up. When the mounting holes line up, drop the screw in and
tighten. I substituted Kadee #158 'scale' whisker couplers for a more
prototypic look. While the whiskers protrude a little beyond the box, they
work just fine.
I figured out the window extension OK, but I haven't figured out what the
little gray piece that somewhat resembles a grab iron, but isn't.
Walthers could do a better job with the instructions for the extra parts!

Maybe that's why the coupler box isn't installed. They can't figure it out
either. All seriousness aside, try sanding the sides and the top and bottom
of the box with a nailboard or sanding stick. Also the draft gear opening
may be slightly clogged with paint. Attack with needle files as appropriate.
The frame may not be seated fully into the body causing a clearance problem
with the frame coupler mounting pad. File and adjust as appropriate.
The older P2K spare parts were intended to be affixed as per modeler
preference. If you want foggy windows, use ACC. If you want the all weather
cab windows to attach neatly, try Aileen's craft glue or modelers Canopy
glue.
The little glass panels are most likely the wind screens and you wouldn't
need these with an all weather cab window. There may be accessory holes
dimpled on the inside of the cab casting or they may expect the modeler to
measure the pins and drill holes appropriately.
Always refer to a photograph. If it isn't on the photo, it isn't on the
model.
The fine grab irons. Without seeing them and the model all I can tell you is
they could be on the top of the long hood, I've seen these on all models of
SWs. It could be on the rear wall of the cab, there is a vertical grab next
to the door on most EMD SWs. Here is what you can do. Find a good photo.
Determine if that is the date you want to model your engine, go over it with
a magnifier and replicate every detail you see. If you find a better photo
later then you can obsess about it and change your modeling era like I do.
And never get anything done.

Have just bought one of these, like it a lot, but now have some comments
and questions that may assist others.
(1) I am embarrassed to admit how much time it took me to figure out how
to install the couplers. Completely assembling the coupler and box away from
the chassis and then trying to force fit that assembly through the outside
opening in the pilot seemed counterintuitive because it would notslide
through easilyand seemed to require too much force. I was reluctant to apply
that much force on a new and fragile model, so I figured the coupler lid
should be applied from the truck side of the pilot. Never could get it to
fit, so went back and force fitted the completed assembly through the VERY
tight opening in the pilot, exerting much more pressure on delicate parts
than I deemed prudent. But that's the way it goes on and I hope this info
saves someone a lot of time and frustration.
(2) from pictures of the prototype it seems the extended windows on the
cab were pretty standard on the CB & Q. SW1200s. There are extra parts for
that in the box. Now, does anyone know whether these are supposed to be
glued on, or can they be snapped-in somehow? I tend to shy away from using
glues around clear plastic. so hope someone can tell me how to snap them in.
(3) in the parts package there are two very thin, very small clear plastic
strips with a mounting pin on each end. Where do these go? The only thing I
can think of is they are supposed to be "air defectors" that are vertical
and in front of the front side of the cab windows. Or, perhaps they are
supposed to be rearview mirrors. Hope someone can tell me for sure.
(4) also in the parts package are some very fine wire grab irons. Where do
these go? From photos I have seen there are similarly fashioned grab irons
on the roofs of SW1s, but I don't see any on later Q switchers.. Can anyone
please comment on this.
