For all who remember Aurora RH and environs, this may be humorous. For those
who do NOT remember Aurora RH it might still be interesting.
Since the RH and associated bldgs. were at ground level and the main line was
elevated it only stands ta reason that any track built to connect the two
different levels would be on an incline, hence, the track off main 1, over
Spring St., was known as the "incline". Down the incline and proceeding north
(compass) one would eventually find oneself in the Hill Yd., the suburban car
storage place. Between the bottom of the incline and the Hill Yd. the track
went up a slight grade all the way ta Farnsworth Ave. Now, if a sw. crew had a
car on the west end of the engine that needed ta be on the east end of the
engine they would shove it a short distance up the incline, secure it, run the
eng. down to the freight house lead, get in the clear and wait for the
switchman to let the car roll down the hill and secure it again and wait for
the eng. to come out and couple to the WEST end of it. A gravity "Dutch Drop"
was made.
This particular day the Road Foreman's clerk was, for lack of better things ta
do, idly staring out of a RH office window. While staring he observed a tank
car rolling down the incline, absent an engine. This, of course, was not
unusual given the possibility of the scenario described above. While
continuing to stare, however, the clerk observed the same tank car rollong back
UP the incline, still with no engine present. Soon, the car began its downhill
trip again and still no engine. After witnessing the car again rolling UP the
incline with still no engine he decided ta call Eola YM and inquire as to
exactly WHAT the Aurora job was doing. The YM told him there WAS no Aurora job
down there. The clerk then suggested that he GET an engine down there, RIGHT
NOW !! The car had appearently gone on a sightseeing trip all by itself and
was in the process of locating the lowest point in the track between the two
hills. The car was captured, no damage was done and the clerk was treated to
some free entertainment.
