See Karls story about the tank car rolling back and forth in the Aurora
yard.
Just a handful of years ago a somewhat similar event happened on the same
spot but of course the track layout is now quite a bit different so the
outcome was not the same.
Seems there were a couple TTX flats in the west yard at Eola that for some
reason needed to be "runaround"(trk maintenance machinery loading). So the
switch engine crew pulled them onto the front lead and was using the back
lead to make the runaround move to get on the east end of them(everything
at Eola is still pretty much done on the west end of the yards).
One way or another the cars started travelling west bound on the front
lead( I heared the crew tried to couple into them but the knuckles didnt drop
and the cars had been bled off w/o a handbrake tied. The other story was the
cars started rolling on their own)either way the cars rolled thru the
front/back lead high switch, out onto the main and down what used to be called
the Aurora lead. They then picked up considerable speed on that nice incline.
But instead of rolling up the incline at Spring st(since that is long
gone) they proceeded to knock the bumping post off the end of the outside
platform trk. at the station and travelled for a while on the road leading
into
the back parking lot of the station.
This transpired over the weekend and I learned of it on Monday when I
asked how the "wheel marks" got in the blacktop.
If you look at the lead from main #1 into the west yard at Mc Clure RD at
Eola you'll note that there is now one of those switch type derails
installed. Now you know why.
