Thanks for all these replies everyone, of course the next two questions are 
what style were Denver Texas and Fort Worth and Union Pacific Denver and Gulf? 
We want to represent all roads on the car (it's not triangular or three sided 
!).

I have the BRHS Steam Locomotive Lettering Sheet but it only shows 4 digits and 
is a "cartoon", not a stencil drawing, meant for showing general placement only.

The Grandt book on freight cars refers to the style as St. Charles Roman. 
Not sure but suspect this is the same for passenger equipment, Also, the 
Burlington Historical Society has a locomotive lettering sheet. Hope this 
helps.
