I've been doing some research on the box cars BN inherited from the pre-merger
roads to aid my late 1976 era modelling using the April 1977 Official Railway
Equipment Register, two BN lists of Equipment and a BN freight cars diagram
book to help me decide what cars to model and the best models to use as a
starting point.
I recently came across this photo of CB&Q 48673
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1725639 from the series
CB&Q 48600-48774 taken in June 1978 which looks like it came from an XA-15
family 50' double door automobile car.
The series CB&Q 48600-48774 is not shown in the January 1966 ORER, but it
appears in the BN Lists of Equipment and 82 cars remained in CB&Q
paint/reporting marks in the April 1977 ORER: 51 XM cars, 24 XP cars with no
doors in green veneer service and 7 XP cars in hide loading service. The early
70s BN equipment diagram book makes mention of only the cars with no doors in
green veneer service. The strengthened side sills are of similar design to the
1968 and 69 40' XM-32 and XA-16 Havelock rebuilds which I believe were done
under sale and lease back with US Leasing such as these 1968
http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=37579 and 1969
http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=37595 rebuilds.
With the aid of Railway Prototype Cyclopedia Vol 13 (which covers the XA-15
family of 50' steel auto cars and XA-16 40' steel auto cars) and the other
references I have access to, I'm assuming the CB&Q 48600-48774 series cars were
rebuilt sometime between 1966 and 1968 from XA-15A cars. Does anyone know the
source of the CB&Q 48600-48774 series? Thanks.
