In effect some "repainting" began in 1968 at the time of the aborted merger
(Supreme Court intervened) with CB&Q having most of the prototypes - the so
called hockeystick green/white on U boats and a 'billboard' white Burlington on
all green box cars. The ultimate BN green was a different shade and the plan
to add 'Northern' underneath the 'Burlington' never happened to these 1968
cars. (great plan though - Q/GN/NP mgrs were bound & determined NOT to end up
with a PC fiasco)
BN began repainting cars & locos ASAP on M day as well as insuring cars already
ordered (in the pipeline) got BN paint & lettering. The changes took years
however due to the shear size of BN. Some cars got BN paint & logo but kept
old reporting marks (esp. true of C&S & FtW&D as they technically did not
'merge' til yrs later). Multicolored consists could be found into the mid-70's
and the last of the locos to be repainted was late 70's (CB&Q #1960 being the
last Q loco in red/white - operated around So. Sioux City).
If you attend BRHS meets lots of photos, publications, etc giving you the
details are available from BRHS "company store", dealers & fellow Q fans. And
of course mbrship in BRHS brings a LOT of data sheets, publications, etc. Also
popular mags like Trains, Railfan & X2200 South had a lot of pages devoted to
the subject in 1970 - ck hobby shops, dealers AND BRHS meets to find issues.
My favorite pic (slide I took in "75 or "76 in Sioux City) was a pr of S-bd GN
blue/white "Big Sky Blue" units pulling a 36' wood Q stock car & an enormous
Boeing fuselage car foloowed by a mix of BN green, GN, NP & Q frt cars- put
that on your layout & all the naysayers would say - that's not prototypical.
It was!
