All,
I am not posting this to trash, insult, or hurt anyone's feelings. This
post comes out of the frustration of a member of the BRHS. I served two terms
on the BRHS BOD. It is time for the BRHS BOD to set some goals for the
next six months of operation of the society. Three goals...
FIRST: A new Burlington Bulletin out to the membership. Mailed to the
members prior to that Bulletin showing up in the hobby shops. Nothing is more
insulting to a member than to walk into his local hobby shop and low and
behold there's a new Bulletin there and a month later yours comes in the mail.
SECOND: A calendar put out on time. Did January 1 "sneak" up on us?
THIRD: Before we can even think about having a joint meet with other
Railroad Historical Societies, we need to get our own annual meeting set up
and
ready to go. We are five months and a few days away from the 2009 Annual
Meet and according to the BRHS web page, a host hotel hasn't been chosen. The
ballot for the election of BOD members HAVE to be mailed out in time for
the members to vote and return them before the meet.
Remember it's the MEMBERSHIP that is important here. The BRHS wouldn't
exist without the members of the society. The time has come for some action.
And yes I am putting my action behind this, Dave Lotz has asked me to help
him with the Zephyr.
Finally to members of the society, the officers and the BOD can not do
everything. If you can ask, what can I do to help? It maybe as simple as
manning the registration table at the Spring or Annual Meetings. Helping with
the
model contest, clinics, helping set up tables and chairs for the swap
meet, or just being involved helping where you can assist.
I have thought long and hard over posting this as I have seen both sides of
the issues facing our society. From a member to operation of the BRHS. The
BRHS has produced outstanding publications. We as a group need to thank
guys like Hol Wagner, Dave Lotz, and Mike Spoor that have made our
publications the best in the business. Our past Meets, as a group we had our
own
special "Dinkie" downtown, we toured BN "College" in Kansas City, toured the
BN
Business Car Shop, had a cocktail party at the S&I Museum with a private
tour of the Pioneer Zephyr, toured the shops at West Burlington... and the
BN/Metra Shops at the Zephyr Pit. In 30 years the BRHS has a rich history.
Please remember the Officers, the BOD members, the Bulletin Editor, and the
Zephyr Editor can not do it all themselves. The job is too complex. Offer
assistance.
