Bridge,,,Rail-auto bridges
The Q bridge at Nebraska City, NE as originally built, now gone...dynamited
in Dec 81 was a?shared operation....
with "highway"...mostly horses, wagons buggies etc.? It was not a double
deck bridge as was the ASB bridge in KC...IIRC, but was a single deck with
the railroad deck planked so that it could be driven over.
My dad attended the University of NE at Lincoln in the 1920's and remembers
traveling over the bridge via auto...
A highway toll bridge was built in the 1930's to replace the shared auto
operation.....This bridge was also demolished about 10 years or so ago
replaced by a new 4 lane highway bridge.....
Interestingly the fill dirt which constituted the long? railroad approach
from the Iowa side was moved south about 1/2 mile or so and used to
construct a similar approach for Hwy 2 which, being constructed almost to
interstate standards connects I 80 at Lincoln to I 29 just east of Nebraska
City near what us old railroaders knew as Payne...early timetables labeled
it East Nebraska City
Test question...What did ASB stand for???

Speaking of bridges, did the Q have any bridges shared with auto traffic?
The SP (now UP) has a swing bridge in Sacramento that has double track on
the lower deck and automobile roadway on the upper deck.
Best regards,
Randy
