Bob
It is traffic patterns and haulage.
I once asked many years ago why we (BN ) moved cars from Galesburg thru Zearing
to Chicago and gave them to the Penn Central only to get them broken into by
the Chicagoland Gangs. Why not give them to the PC at Zearing???
Answer given was "We would not want to Short Haul ourselves"
So instead the railroad paid out for loss and damage merchendise

Subject: [CBQ] Barstow Followup
Russ and Leo, thank you very much for your very informative responses to our
question about 64/69 and Barstow.
Here's the followup question concerning interchange with the Rock Island and
the Milwaukee. The H.H. Copeland report on CB&Q Traffic Interchanged in 1947
and 1948 that the BRHS mailed out awhile back shows that in 1948 the Q
delivered 7,500 cars to the Rock Island at Silvis Transfer and 5,600 cars to
the Milwaukee at East Moline, receiving 800 and 2,900 cars respectively.
Again, as non-professionals, we're wondering why so many cars were delivered in
the Quad Cities rather than Chicago as well as the nature of the traffic
delivered and received.
Thanks,
Bob Herrick
