The leasing of Q Diners extended to the Seaboard as well and may date back
before the steel car era.

There was a wreck on the Seaboard at Southern Pines, NC on February 18, 1916
that involved a CB&Q diner.

As you know, Pullman built DA-6 Burlington ACF pattern diners 178-187 (and C&S
706 & FW&D 263) in 1922, and
built a further six cars for their lease fleet numbered 188-193 in 1924 to the
same drawings. These car numbers do
not show up on CB&Q rosters.

The 188-190 were sold to the KCS in 1929; the 191-193 went to the KCS in March
of 1937.

The Silver Pheasant 190, Silver Inn 191, and Silver Spoon 192 "reused" these
numbers which were never assigned
by the Q itself. The sale of the cars in 1937 was likely the result of
decreased traffic forecasted for the depression
summer of 1936 and the planned order (placed in October of 1936) for the Budd
diners which were delivered in May 1938.

The diners owned by Pullman for extra lease were in the 1-24 number series so
it is obvious that the cars were
intended for and/or used in CB&Q service and likely supported a long-standing
arrangement between the Q and the
Florida roads to utilize equipment year round balancing opposing heavy travel
seasons.

This research is largely from BRHS member Al Hoffman, who unfortunately is not
a computer user
so cannot post this information himself. The actual Pullman lease documents
and Equipment Registry listings have
not been reviewed yet as far as I know to nail down the actual ownership of the
188-193; it is likely that the cars may
have been ordered by the Q but they decided they did not need or could not
afford the cars.

As a sidebar to this story, there is an urban legend that the lease of diners
inspired the "Ribbon Style" lettering that first
was used on the "Suburbanaire" service test paint rebuilt commuter coaches. A
diner came back from winter lease with ACL
ribbon style lettering and was so admired by the brass in Chicago that it was
adapted for many modernized heavyweights
instead of the Zephyr alphabet which might have been otherwise expected.
