SJL,
Interesting. Also interesting that you can see those 1977 cars
in storage. Between the 1980-1983 BN got into a "numbers game"
that had to get rid of anything based on numbers. This included
both cars and locomotives. They would come out with number of
cars based on a number, say "5000", that was based on numbers
rather then condition. Locomotives went in units as high as
"100" or "25" picked as numbers.
In some cases these cars or locomotives were actually in service
but if they were on the numbers there were gone. While most units
were paid some were not. During this game it did not matter, even
if not sold they were shipped to anyone that would accept it.
By the 1984 and later they got some new management and realized
that they had lost more things that they might have wanted.
After that they were much more careful and were even making
sure they got money before it was shipped.

Thanks.
This information is very helpful.
I wonder if the reason these cars had such a deferred maintenance pricetag
was that they had been mothballed whereas the Ex-DZ and CZ cars were in
continuous use. It would be interesting to determine when the picture at the
link http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=721784 was taken, because
it shows substantial vandalism damage.
