Pete,
Considering the very short crews did they handle both ends?
Would the mixed crew handle both C&S and AT&SF trains?
I both lived in Colorado Springs and have worked at Denver-
LaJunta much later. Just about all the older crews worked from
Denver to home at Pueblo. Pueblo to LaJunta was the Conductor and
Engineer LaJunta to Pueblo. Crews on duty would often get a round
trip both Denver to Pueblo and Pueblo or Pueblo and LaJunta turns.
Most are now retired by now and new crews would just run Denver-
LaJunta. Crews now running from Denver would go all crews:
LaJunta, Trinidad, Grand Junction, Cheyenne, Sterling, and McCook.
As I'm sure you know no Engineers are hired. After 1 year each
Conductor had to get Engineers qualified. As far as I know that is
now 100 percent everyway on BNSF and probable also UP. There are
no crews at Texline.
Crews now run LaJunta to Newton and have around 280 miles. Quit
a trip.

From strictly memory of my one and only trip over the joint line in August
1955, seems I remember that on the passenger trains you could have a "mixed"
train crew....Maybe a Q (C&S) Conductor and a ATSF Brakeman or two.

The D&RGW / D&RG also ran the MP, CRI&P and AT&SF trains. Before the
Santa Fe built their line north from Colorado Springs, the D&RG
handled their trains - the locomotives used (and for freight, the
cabooses), were the first standard gauged equipment on the
railroad. Of course, that also meant that the D&RG line was 3 rails.
