Street runnin'.
Rock Falls/Sterling were two of the towns in which I ran engines down
the middle of a street.
Leaving Rock Falls the tracks crossed the Rock River and then the
C&NW. After crossing the Northwestern the track made a left hand curve
and proceeded down the street to the intersection with route 88.
Often the light would stop the traffic and the RR for Rt. 88. With
cars stopped ahead of the engine it was "interesting" to ring the bell
or "toot" the whistle. The response was, often, hilarious. Never
caused a wreck (that I knew of) but had LOTS a fun.
Once in the Sterling "yard" all fun ceased. Tracks that held no more
than five cars between crossings were used to store a thirty-car train
for no. 94 that night.
Rock Falls also had its interesting aspects.
